Christmas Eve Services
Christmas Eve Services - 5:00 PM and 11:00 PM
Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church, 100 W. Washington
Shepherdstown, WV 25443
304-876-6466 [map]
Price: None

The Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church holds three Christmas Eve services. The middle one at 7 PM is the most popular; the choir sings and there is a short pre-service concert by talented children of all ages, performing on their instrument or singing and the service is robust and full bodied, like good wine.

This year, I am playing for the two other services - not that I don't like good wine...

* The short (half-hour) 5:00 PM service is designed for young children and their families. At some point in the service, I play my autoharp and lead the singing of "The Friendly Beasts", a carol that dates back to 12th century England wherein animals get to tell what they did for the baby Jesus on his birth night. A long-standing legend says that animals are given the gift of speech at midnight on Christmas Eve, so this song is relating to that. It is a lovely carol worth knowing.

* At the 11:00 PM service, I will play alto recorder (Kari Edge plays piano) to accompany carols and some of the Taize chants we sing. This is my favourite service - candlelit, simple and lovely. The service ends in a candlelit circle for the singing of "Silent Night which I lead with recorder. We depart in silence at midnight ...sometimes in the falling snow...

Everyone is welcome to attend these services. There is no collection during the service, but if you care to contribute to the baskets where you come in or go out, all collections go to local charities, usually The Shenandoah Women's Shelter and  The Martinsburg Rescue Mission.

Best Civil War Shows
Best Civil War Shows - Reception 7:15, Show 8:00 p.m.
Black Cat Arts Center, Princess St.
Shepherdstown, WV 25443 [map]
Price: $5 for each of three shows, March 26, 27 & 28

I am providing music and songs for a series of three "Best Civil War Story" shows at Shepherdstown's Blackbox Arts Center starting  Thursday, March 26 and continuing Friday and Saturday, March 27 & 28. The music will enhance readings from letters and diaries written in Jefferson County during the Civil War by members of several prominent families here. The letters and diaries were so well written and the stories they told so eye-opening, sometimes grim, sometimes heart-breaking, sometimes humorous. I have found a variety of music from the period - fiddle-tunes, hymns, popular songs and some classical pieces. I will include three songs I wrote to poems of Danske Dandridge (a Bedinger family child of ten at the time of these stories who was already writing good poetry). They were all good writers, so it has been a joy to help form this production. Jim Surkamp was given access to the letters and diaries by descendents of the writers. Ardyth Gilbertson and Homer Speaker will alternate the readings with Jim and I will be at the piano, weaving music and songs throughout the readings.

The Blackbox Arts Center is a small, intimate theater, seating just under 100. Jan Hafer is providing refreshments before and after the shows. Your $5 contribution was designed to make it affordable for you to attend all three shows as each show is different from the other. Each night will cover a different period and the readings and music will be fresh and new for each show.
